Zidane shares with Messi the insider knowledge of donning the "5" jersey at Real Madrid!

During a special interview organized by Adidas, former French football star Zinedine Zidane surprised Lionel Messi by revealing the reason behind choosing the number "5" jersey during his tenure at Real Madrid. In their conversation, Messi, expecting the iconic number 10 for a playmaker, was intrigued by Zidane's unconventional choice. Zidane explained to Messi that Real Madrid's president, Florentino Perez, had reservations about players wearing numbers like 25, 30, and 35. According to Zidane, Perez adhered to a traditional mindset associating number 1 with goalkeepers and number 11 with players in the front line. Zidane elaborated, saying, "Manolo Sanchez had the No. 5 shirt in Madrid. When he left and I arrived, the president suggested, 'Don’t you want a number from 1 to 10?' We opted for the No. 5 shirt because Perez wanted to avoid numbers like 25, 30, and 35, which are more common in American football." Zidane's transfer to Real Madrid in 2001, in a groundbreaking 77.50 million euro deal from Juventus, marked the beginning of a successful five-year stint. During his time with the club, Zidane secured victories in the Spanish League, the Champions League, the European Super Cup, the Intercontinental Cup, and the Spanish Super Cup. Following his retirement from playing in 2006 after France's World Cup loss, Zidane continued his successful career as the coach of the Madrid giants.
